Forthcoming Events

  • Singing in the Square: Borough Welsh Choir
    Sunday, July 28, 2019 - 14:00 to 17:00

TNRA is organising another opportunity for residents to meet their neighbours and enjoy music in a local setting. This year, we have booked 20 singers from the award-winning Borough Welsh Choir to perform for sun bathers and picnickers in the garden of Trinity Church Square from 2 pm to 5 pm on the afternoon of Sunday 28 July.

The choir, made up of people from all over Wales now living in the city, will perform a range of popular songs from the traditional - Bread of Heaven and Cwm Rhondda - to the more contemporary. There will be three sessions of 30 minutes each with a 30-minute break following each session. Entry is free and no booking is required - just turn up with your refreshments and a rug or folding chair and hope for fine weather!

The Borough Welsh Choir (Côr y Boro) famously won the National Eisteddfod choral competition in 1929. This is the ultimate accolade for a Welsh choir as the standard of the competition is extremely high. It was even more impressive as the choir was based outside of Wales. The choir disbanded shortly after the Second World War. We reformed in 2016 and have entered the Eisteddfod every year since, coming 3rd place in the 2018 Eisteddfod in Cardiff.

The choir has also sung at 10 Downing St, Prince Charles’s 70th birthday party at Buckingham Palace, at the Houses of Parliament, at the Wales v Georgia match in the Autumn Internationals at the Principality Stadium, on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, the Jeremy Vine Show and numerous events in the SE1 area, such as the Great Get Together and Mint Street Festival.

The choir enjoys frequenting the local pubs, especially when the rugby is on. Its local pub is the Lord Clyde, followed by the St Christopher's Inn. You can normally see the choristers there on a Tuesday evening after rehearsal. Please pop by and join them for a song and a chat.

  • Chaplin walk with John Constable
    Thursday, September 5, 2019 - 19:15 to 21:00

TNRA’s walk in 2019 led by John Constable will take place on the evening of Thursday 5 September.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Charlie Chaplin. There is no official record of his birth, although Chaplin believed he was born at East Street, Walworth, about 1 km away from Trinity Village. The walk will include the church where his parents were married, his supposed birthplace (in East Street), the Lambeth Workhouse where the family were housed in hard times, and West Square where they lived in happier days.

We will also explore the history and culture of the area in the late 19th century with its costermongers and music hall artists, visiting the sites of the old Surrey Gardens zoo and theatre, the Manor Place public baths and the South London Palace, one of London's most celebrated music halls.

We will gather on 5 September from 7.15pm for a 7.30pm departure on the corner of Walworth Road and Larcom Street, close to the Library and Cuming Museum, which were damaged in the 2013 fire. Buses 35 or 40 from Newington Causeway stop close by.

No bookings are required. Just turn up and take part! The walk is arranged by TNRA free of charge for participants.
