We love our Saturday morning shopping round in Great Suffolk Street. Bill and Brenda in Suffolk Meats have a wide range of stuff, and will always butterfly or joint a piece of meat as you ask, as well as ordering in specials, such as English rabbit or goose. And they do a great line in banter. Lee in Eric’s Greengrocers similarly has all the basics you’d want, and if you drop in a list of things the day before, they’ll have everything ready for you, including unusual herbs and special orders. Next we head to Waterloo Wine in Lant Street, where we chat with Peter about Haydn, rugby, cats, cricket and Austrian wine, and maybe try something he’s got open for tasting. His Calvados days are especially warming. Finally, Right Price on Borough High Street near the tube does a good line in tahini, pesto and basmati rice. We haven’t been to a supermarket in years, and Saturday shopping is a real pleasure.
