4 Falmouth Road Died 7 July 2003, aged 85 For nearly 40 years, Tina has been a familiar figure on the Trinity Newington Estate, often accompanied by one of her large friendly dogs, first Penny and then Honey. Tina always had time for a chat and had many friends among the residents. She was always busy and many local people will miss her, not only for her company, but because she played such an important part in their lives. She helped with their cleaning, looked after their children and, most especially, ironed shirts to a professional standard for many local men. She was particularly a great support, and honorary family member (she had no known relatives, having been brought up from birth in a Scottish convent orphanage), of the Youlten family, who have lived for about 40 years on the estate, mainly in Merrick Square. Perhaps her many friends did not realize that she had also moved daily among the high and mighty, working until she retired at 65 at the Library of the House of Commons, first as a cleaner, then as the first ever woman to be appointed an attendant, dealing with MPs, including several Prime Ministers. Sir Alec Douglas Home, being a fellow Scot, was her favourite; "a real gentleman", as she described him, never too grand or too busy to exchange a greeting with the cleaning ladies and other staff. So good was she at her job, that she was selected by the House of Commons to meet the Queen at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party. It was one of the high spots of her life. Before she came to London, Tina had for many years lived as a nurse- companion to Felicity Youlten's wheelchair-bound aunt, Mena. Before that she had been trained in the convent's laundry, where she learned the ironing skills so much appreciated years later by all her "customers". Before settling in the Borough, she had lived in Bristol, Bath, Stanmore, and Fairlight, near Hastings. Mena and Tina had lived with Felicity's mother, and after Mena's death, they moved to London to be near Felicity, her husband Lawrence and their three children. Soon Tina had her own flat, first in Trinity Street, then Swan Street, and finally in Falmouth Road, where at last she had the chance to cultivate a garden of her own, and devote her spare time to her cats and dogs, who could not have had a more caring owner. Though small in stature, she was full of energy, and her efficiency in helping with such activities as house moves or spring cleaning led to her family nickname, the "white tornado". She was active and working until a few weeks before her recent death in St Thomas's Hospital. She is greatly missed, especially by residents in Falmouth Road. Felicity Youlten |
