Estate Streets

Nov 2006

At the beginning of the Summer, TNRA hosted a ‘street audit’ with members from Southwark Council’s Street Leader Team: a walk round the estate streets identifying problem areas and drawing up an action plan. This was part of the Street Leader Scheme – where nominated individuals can act as contact points, ensuring that our local streets are clean, safe and well kept. Anyone can nominate themselves to adopt a local street and become a ‘street leader’. Details are on the Southwark Council website (www.southwark.gov.uk).

The council aims to rectify any problems within 24–48 hours of them being notified by a Street Leader. Typical examples of problems which can be sorted out quickly are:

  • Clearing dumped rubbish/fly-tipping
  • Missed rubbish collections
  • Graffiti removal
  • Urgent pavement repairs / paving repairs
  • Repairs to street furniture
  • Clearing overhanging vegetation
  • Dog mess
  • Street sweep requests

After our audit the following actions were completed within a couple of days:

  • Overhanging vegetation cut back along Falmouth Road pavement
  • Merrick Square: all lamp columns repainted
  • Removal of untidy old grit boxes from Trio Place
  • Unnecessary street clutter (poles, signage) has been notified to the relevant
  • Council department for removal at a future date

The council is keen for the Street Leader Campaign to be a success. For further information please see the Southwark Council website, or, if you would like to report an item for attention, please e-mail info@tnra.net with subject heading 'street leader’.
