Review of Controlled Parking Zone D (CPZ D) - February 2007

Public consultation - deadline for responses 5 March 2007

Southwark Council is consulting residents as part of its long-awaited review of CPZ D, in which Newington (Trust) Estate lies. The zone is the area bounded by Borough High Street/Newington Causeway, New Kent Road, Tower Bridge Road and Long Lane.

Residents should have received a consultation document and questionnaire from the council in mid-February (if you have not received this document, it can be seen on the Southwark Council website at www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/Parking/cpzreviews/newingtondcpzreview). If you were unable to get to the exhibitions and would like to look at a map showing the proposed increases in parking space on the estate, call at 57 Trinity Church Square to see TNRA's copy.

The consultation document does not include maps showing changes in the provision of parking spaces. These will be available at the exhibitions or can be requested from the Southwark website (see above).

If you are concerned about any aspect of parking in the area, please try to go to one of the exhibitions, return the pre-paid questionnaire or e-mail the council officers: parkingreview@southwark.gov.uk (giving your name and full street address).

Main points to note in the consultation document are:

  • Suggested increase in controlled hours to include Saturday morning
This has been requested by residents in other zones - particularly in the Borough Market area. It will only be introduced in CPZ D if a large number of residents are in favour.
    • If you have a preference, return the questionnaire and tell the council what you want.
  • Proposed conversion of all resident permit parking bays to resident or business permit bays
    • If you want parking places near you to remain for residents only, return the questionnaire and say so under Q4.
  • Extra residents parking?
Until we see the maps, we do not know what extra spaces are proposed. The council is committed to balancing the needs of residents, businesses and visitors. TNRA receives frequent complaints from residents about being unable to find parking spaces and so we have asked for residents parking to replace yellow lines in several places on the estate (see below).
    • Try to look at the maps and comment on the amount of new residents parking proposed by the council.
    • If you have experienced difficulty in parking (even if you are unable to see what is proposed), use Q4 of the questionnaire to tell the council this.

TNRA´s requests already sent to the parking review

As a result of consultation with residents, TNRA has asked for

  • More residents´ permit parking in the following places:
    • Trinity Street East (from Shaftesbury House to no 40) and outside Shere House
North side of Trinity Church Square outside 46 to 53 (towards the gate) and outside 61 to 67 (towards the junction of Swan Street).
    • (Additional parking in these two areas was intended to be part of the traffic calming. It will narrow Trinity Street and the approach to the gate from TCS, making it more difficult for illegal motorcycles to manoeuvre through)
    • Cole Street: additional spaces on the south west side.
  • More parking in Swan Street north, diagonal for maximum space, mixed residential and pay and display.
  • The introduction of a Visitor Permit Scheme in the area. [This is proposed.]
  • More motor cycle bays.
  • Hoops for securing motorcycles in the Trinity Street motorcycle bay.
  • Cycle stands in TCS and Merrick Square.

After the exhibitions, we shall make further representations to the council, based on comments from residents. If you make comments please copy them to our co-ordinator Penny Hinves, 36 Trinity Street, pennyhinves@aol.com. We can then reinforce the majority views to the parking review team.
